A synagogue in ancient times did not represent a sacred space of worship. Synagogue comes from a Greek term meaning an assembly or gathering. Wherever people gathered in ancient times to discuss the word of God was considered a synagogue.
Yeshua teaches from the mountain starting with blessed is he who experiences these 9 things for they will receive the following things.
- poor in spirit–kingdom of heaven
- mourn–comforted
- meek–inherit the earth
- hunger and thirst after righteousness–shall be filled
- merciful–obtain mercy
- pure heart–shall see God
- peacemakers–called the children of God
- persecuted for righteousness sake–theirs is the kingdom of heaven
- when men should revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you for Yeshua’s sake–be exceedingly glad and rejoice for your reward is great in heaven! [Matthew 5:3-12 King James Version (KJV)]
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
“Blessed is he who” is very ancient phrase seen in Psalm 1 below and 119.
Psalm 1 King James Version (KJV)
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
