Darkness refers to walking on a sinful path.

Can Christians walk in sin and consider themselves to be a Christian: follower of Yeshua (Jesus)?

I once strongly thought that answer was yes.  Perhaps for new believers Yahweh blinks at the ignorant.  For those who know better, Yahweh will not tolerate presumptuous sin.  I now think very differently now that I  know better and encountered the living God.   How do you feel?

Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Psalm 19:13

Personally, God led me to abhor sin.  Once I saw the truth about the dangers of sin and committed my life to Yahweh, I could no longer tolerate sin.  In my mind sin is tantamount to stepping off a cliff or slowly and unknowingly destroying oneself.  Once I equated sin with death; my relationship to sin changed.  Sin had to be eliminated because I did not want to die.  Let us see what the word says about sin.

Let love be without hypocrisy Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Romans 12:9

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.  1 John 3:9-10

22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1:22-25

The law of liberty requires work on our part.  The law of liberty represents the Ten Commandments written by the finger of God done away at the death of Yeshua (Jesus Christ), but Yahweh reestablished those laws by writing them on the hearts of believers via the Holy Spirit.  That’s a great thing Yahweh did for us giving us His laws of liberty to set us free from bondage to sin and Satan. Yahweh’s laws are great!

The great thing our Creator did for us includes setting our ancestors free from bondage in Egypt.  This great thing includes God coming down to earth and personally speaking to humankind giving us His laws of life and liberty and writing them down on tablets of stone with His finger.  God describes this as that great thing!  We must not overlook this key point.

See Deuteronomy 4:32-35 in this lists or below–ponder this

For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.  Deuteronomy 4:32-35
